"[...] the swampland of the soul is an important place to visit, but you would not want to live there." - Brené Brown

Author's note: I would like to introduce a different post to bring some random thoughts based on the quote above. I will try to write similar posts with other quotes that I find interesting. Today, my inspiration is Brené Brown, author of books like "Daring greatly", "The gifts of imperfection", "I though it was just me", among others. She also has two podcasts: "Unlocking Us" and "Dare to Lead".

-----

What would be the 'swampland of the soul'? Well, it's just an ugly, stinky place, a place we want to avoid as much as we can, since we don't tolerate being there. We can come up with a plan to pass through it in some other way, maybe finding an "easier" path, maybe bypassing it. However, no matter how hard it is, one day we will have to face this swampland. It's uncomfortable, terrible, exhausting, but it's important to deal with it. What's the point of following the "10 steps to become a happier person" if we pretend the swampland doesn't exist?

Self-knowledge comes with both our strengths and our weaknesses. It's useless to focus only on the good parts; we need to explore the whole. Just like emotions, in order to appreciate positive emotions more, we have to face the negative ones as well, without putting aside or ignoring them. We don't have an on and off button that can be used whenever we want, that's why we have to learn to deal with everything we feel, to become emotionally literate. Of course it isn't an easy process, since many of us are inserted in a culture that only tries to focus on the positive, which - lo and behold - ends up being even more harmful.

I really like this quote from Brené, because it shows in a simple way something that I try to apply in my life: it is necessary to know and deal with the bad side, but we don't need to trap ourselves in it. The swampland can even change in certain ways, but it will never cease to exist, as we will always have our ugly parts and this does not make us inadequate or worthless people, but makes us human. Connection happens precisely when we know that the other is also imperfect and from there we can feel belonging and worthy.

Our attitudes won't change overnight. For many, ignoring the swampland of the soul is on autopilot and it's hard to see it. Let's suppose that a person eats chocolate whenever they're stressed, which leads them to eat several tablets per day. Maybe they will never notice this problem until someone points it out or something serious ends up happening because of this addiction. That way, it's important that they notice it to keep an eye on the autopilot. We must respect our rhythm and carefully observe our progress, no matter how small it may seem, because it's the small steps that will lead us to the best possible path.
