Pensamentos aleatórios #3 - Ame Mais = Mais Amor / Random Thoughts #3 - Love More = More Love

Ame Mais = Mais Amor

Do amor próprio:

“[...] In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.”

– in Touched by An Angel, by Maya Angelou

Author's note: I believe that, when hearing the word "love", many people automatically think of movies or songs that talk about "soul mates". Reading the quote above, it's easy to imagine the ones we love. However, I want to talk about two different types of love today: love your neighbor and self-love. While the first one is based on the respect we need to have towards other people in order to live harmoniously as a society, the second one is about the healthy affection and care that we should have with ourselves.
A lot of what I'll bring today will be about the current (postelections) situation of Brazil.
Maya Angelou (Marguerite Ann Johnson) was a writer, dancer, actress and activist from the USA. Her best-known poem is "And Still I Rise" - which you can hear her reciting it in this video - and her most famous autobiographical work is "I know Why the Caged Bird Sings".

Love More = More Love

About loving your neighbor:

We live in a post-pandemic era, in which fear settled in and people seem no longer able to talk peacefully. It has affected everyone in so many ways that many of us can't even remember what it's like to live without worries. There is so much information, so much violence and hate between people that we can't take it anymore.

I truly beliece that social media, as much as it has its advantages, has put us even deeper in our protected and polarized bubbles, which causes people to spread hate around, as well as refusing to understand the other side of things. Why do these people think there is only one right answer? Why so much difficulty thinking more critically or admitting your own mistake, understanding that we are human and can fail? We can't just defend ourselves, we have to learn from the mistake and improve. And that's what we should always do with our politicians: see their mistakes and demand improvements. Why are the people against the people?

It's very easy to feel guilty and vulnerable in this current scenario. There's a lot going on in our head that, as a form of psychic defense, we end up normalizing it. And we shouldn't do that.

Everyone seems to be on high alert, as if they have to be ready at all times to fight. This is exactly what is draining us and driving us further apart. It seems that we no longer know how to talk peacefully and I believe that, at this point, the technique of non-violent communication becomes even more necessary. We must try to understand what the other means by what they are saying, what the feeling behind those words is, so that we can ask the right questions and have a peaceful conversation. Of course, the other will not always contribute to make this happen, but it's important that we try and do our part, so that we don't end up fighting.

Hate seems to come so easily. What is lacking is the practice of love, of listening calmly and attentively, of discussing without raising the voice or judgment. Because it's very easy to talk, talk, talk, but are we really listening to ourselves and listening to others?

About self-love:

Often, our routine is so hectic that it's hard to stop to take a breath and try to understand what we're feeling at that moment. I think many of us even try to inhibit feelings just to keep dealing with the everyday life. But there comes a time when it all accumulates and we explode, whether it's with anger, taking it out on others, or a deep sadness that makes us want to stay in bed.

I have to say that I end up doing this from time to time, (but it is something that has improved a lot thanks to therapy) and I usually find myself angry at everything around me. To avoid this, I need to stop for a moment, get away from the Internet, read a book, write something on paper or listen to a song to reflect a little. Why am I feeling this way? What has been bothering me lately?

I think that, while living so much online, it's easy to neglect real life. After all, you can be whoever you want in this virtual world, and even better, if you make a mistake, you can go back and redo your actions, getting the right result. Unfortunately, offline is not that simple. There are no on-screen instructions that guide you where or what you have to do. It's also not easy to acquire skills overnight, nor does it have a button to make time go by faster, nor does it have a way to use "cheats".

But my illusion with the online went beyond that. I had friends in that virtual environment, people who never had the malice to bully me or make me feel inferior somehow. There, not only did I feel that I belonged, but I also felt admired, I laughed with them, had fun and could be myself. I didn't have much of that kind of experience in real life, so it was very natural for me to stay with that online group for years.

However, it was by meeting the right people that I finally freed myself from that illusion. I started therapy after a lot of persistence and since then I've been feeling a lot better and having fun in real life too. I found ways to love myself and to love others equally, without fear or mistrust.

The first thing I wanted to improve was my insecurity, my inferiority complex. After a few therapy sessions, self-reflective practice, support from people close to me and several attempts, things around me made sense and I can face everything with more confidence than before. Now, I can value what I do, what I feel and what I am. I needed to look at myself with care and see that what I expected was something too ideal.

I needed to learn to really love myself so I could grow and improve what I wanted and, with each passing day, with all the ups and downs, I keep striving to cultivate that love, since it's what allows me to keep dreaming, it inspires me and makes me want to be better and, best of all, makes me love everything around me even more.

Final notes: It's hard to think about the practice of love, even more so during this time we are in. I hope that the text(s) can make you reflect a bit and somehow encourage us to keep trying our best for ourselves and for others. What made you happy recently?
