Então, finalmente tive a coragem e decidi começar.

Author's note: In 2018 (I think), a college professor gave my class an idea to write a letter to ourselves and she would return them to us after a year (she actually did it and I thought it was the cutest thing in the world). Since then, I try to write every year to my next year self, and in 2020, I even wrote to my 2030 self! I think it's a really fun activity and it's really nice to see how I've changed from one year to the next. I leave here the letter I wrote in 2019 and, below, I will explain some of the references I made so that you can also understand. I hope you like the letter and the idea (I highly recommend doing it, it's so satisfying. You can schedule the email to arrive the following year).

Dear Júlia,
Another year has passed, how are you feeling?
In mid-2019, you finally started therapy(1) and started to make some progress. Are you still doing it? Were there changes/deconstructions/things to reinforce? She (the therapist) has been talking to me about authenticity and I believe that, as I manage to deconstruct my idealization of how I want to be, I will gradually improve in the areas I want(2). How has your progress been this year?
I don't know if you've already decided what you want to do after graduation, but if you haven't, it's okay(3). "There's no need to rush, my pace, don't compare yourself with others, it's okay to run slower [...] Take it easy, just look ahead and run"(4). You have so many possibilities that it's hard to choose a path. Your tastes may change, ideas too, but the important thing is that you are doing what you like.
I know sometimes you feel lost, you feel like everything is so confusing, but it's going to be okay. Lean on your friends, have faith in yourself. You may not find yourself 100% and that's okay. Gradually you will discover yourself more and more, changing some attitudes.
And how are your relationships? New friends? Hope you are opening up more to your close friends. You don't have to feel guilty about not being able to respond all the time or not being able to keep the conversation going. You are not obliged to like everything they like and you don't have to feel out of place(5). If you feel any discomfort, speak up. They love you and they will understand.
Reinforcing: yes, you are a wonderful person and yes, you deserve love. You have your worth. The path can be tiring, arduous, horrible, but you will overcome all of it. And it's ok to make mistakes, they happen.
Don't feel stuck in the past. Face it.
And exercises, please(6).
With love,
Júlia

(1) It's so good to reread this letter and see when I really started therapy. I believe that, for 2 years, my friends insisted that I should (try) to do therapy and I, thinking my problems were not big enough, kept stalling to go. Then, I finally had the courage to start. I don't think I've ever been so grateful for my friends' insistence and for what psychoanalysis has given me.
(2) At the time, I had a very, very idealized idea of how I wanted/should be, which made my self-esteem very low/non-existent. It was really hard to love me when I was always demanding so much of myself. I still have some of that "tyrant self" of mine, but it's gotten a lot better since that time. Nowadays, as my therapist has been encouraging me, I always try to go after a "possible me", which not only improved my self-esteem, but also made me very happy and made me try harder to do what I really want.
(3) I believe that this was my fourth year and I would have one more year to get a bachelor's degree in translation. I was quite conflicted about what I wanted to do after the course, as I wasn't sure I wanted to be a teacher and/or a translator. I also wanted to do another graduation, but I didn't know which. There were so many possibilities and so much pressure.
(4) At the time, I was already addicted to K-Pop (I loved BTS too much, but that phase passed) and this specific lyric is Stray Kids - My Pace, which I still listen to when I need to cheer up. It's a fun song with very motivating lyrics, which gives me comfort when I need to know that I'm doing what's right for me, that it's okay that I'm not at the same pace as everyone else. Up to this day, I still love this group so much.
(5) Today I definitely feel much better to talk with my friends, talk about things and not force myself to interact all the time or anything like that. Sometimes I still get the guilt of canceling plans or not talking as much, but nowadays it's much better and I can enjoy the time with them without feeling bad about myself. Overall, social always makes me anxious, but at least a lot less than before.
(6) I am very proud to say that, after 3 or 4 letters asking myself to start exercising (consistently), I finally did it at the end of October this year! I hated the idea of going to the gym, but here I am, persevering, trying to go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. It took a while, but I'm finally doing it.
